    Notes 
    • Was 3rd man to enlist in the Confederate Army from State of SC (1861). He was an uneducated farmer at this time. He was the second largest slave owner in Lancaster and Kershaw counties combined. He was surpassed only by his Father-in-Law Sanford Horton.
    • at age 23, was 5ft 10 inches tall, with fair complexion, blue eyes, and black hair
    • At age 23, along with 83 other men from the area enlisted in Capt Charley F Hinson's Co, Dunovant's Reg't SC Volunteers, on 27 Aug 1861 at the Lancaster County Courthouse, SC. This Company became Co. E, 12th Regiment SC infantry. A meeting held Wed. 21 Aug 1861 at Pleasant Plain Church, the 84 men agreed to join with Capt. Hinson. The history of the Reg't is recorded as Greggs Brigade (later McGowen Brigade)
    • Buried in unmarked grave in Kershaw City. No one remembers which grave is his. Wooden marker rotted away.
    • 12 May 1864, reported missing after the battle of Old Wilderness Tavern at Spottsylvania Courthouse. He was wounded, captured and taken off the battlefield to hospital with wounded Union soldiers. He was transferred to the hospital at Fredricksburg, VA on 19 May 1864.
    • He was wounded on the left side of face and (left?) arm (rolls state left arm, MD letter states right). He was admitted to Lincoln USA General Hospital, Washington, D.C. on 27 May 1864 with rank "C". He was then carried on the POW rolls as Corporal, from 12 Aug 1864 to date of exchange 29 Oct 1864
    • He was transferred to Old Capital Prison, Wasington, D.C. on 26 Jul 1864, and hospitalized there from 29 Jul 1864 to 12 Aug 1864 in the hospital at the prison.
    • He was returned to duty and transferred to Elmira Prison, Elmira, NY 12 Aug 1864.
    • 11 Oct 1864 he was paroled and transferred to Point Lookout, MD arriving on 14 Oct, 1864. Departing Point Lookout, MD for Venus Point Savannah River. He was received Nov. 15th 1864 at Venus Point, Savannah River, From John E, Mulford, Lt. Col. & Asst. Agt. for Exchange W. H. Hatch. Total there where Three Thousand and Twenty Three(3023) paroled Confederate Prisoners of War, including 4 citizens, 4 Surgeons, and Seventy Four Officers. The roll states that all of these prisoners were considered invalids
    • He was examined 07 Mar 1865 by Surg. W H Bailey of McGowen's Brigade, and found unfit for duty due to injuries recieved. He was recommended for retirement. He was transferred to Petersburg, VA and appeared before a medical examining board Wilcox Division, on 15 Mar 1865, and retired that date, by order of the Medical Board. Nearest Quartermaster was Charlotte, NC
    • He applied for and was awarded the Southern Cross of Honor, on May 10th 1902. The Southern Cross of Honor was the brain child of Mrs. Alexander S. (Mary Ann Lamar Cobb) Erwin of Athens, Ga.With the first medal presented to her husband on 26 Apr. 1900
